"ENID" The Bright Star of the Great Plains Welcomes You! A town of more than 47,000, Enid is the home of Vance Air Force Base, a military installation that continues to grow strong, and lives up to its reputation by producing the best pilots in the world. According to an article in the April Reader's Digest, Enid was ranked the 28th best place nationally -out of 50 - to raise a family. Roper Center for Public Opinion conducted the survey and contacted parents all over the country to find what they considered the most important factors in a community when raising a family. The 13 factors considered to be the most important are: low crime rate; low drug/alcohol problems; good public schools; quality health care; clean environment; affordable cost of living; strong economic growth and extracurricular school activities. Enid was the only Oklahoma city listed in the top 50 list. Reader's Digest officials said 301 metropolitan areas throughout the country were compared. Enid is home to Leonardo's Discovery Warehouse, a hands-on museum and Adventure Quest, the world's largest outdoor playground. "ENID" Bright Star of the Great Plains was born overnight as a result of the largest land run in history, known as the Cherokee Strip Outlet Land Run of September 16, 1893. We are a proud people, as depicted by the life-size bronze sculpture of "boomer" (123 W. Maine). The sculpture depicts a homeseeker astride his galloping horse, his claim stakes in his hand, making the race for a free quarter section of land or a town lot in the 1893 land run. From Museums honoring the history of our pioneering spirit to scenic golfing greens, Enid enjoys a quality of life not found elsewhere. Our abundant natural resources for which we drill, not only fuel and feed Oklahoma, but a nation as well.
