Lawton, Oklahoma

The beauty of the lovely Lawton sunsets and the Wichita Mountains surprise most visitors when they come to town. Although not the oldest mountain range in the United States, it is older than the majestic Rockies further west. Worn and weathered, our mountains are not high enough to ski down, but as many know, the many granite boulders are just right for climbing.

But a city is more than scenery! It includes the personality and activity of the people that live there, and our personality is unique for Oklahoma. Lawton, Oklahoma is often called the state's third largest city. The historic military post Fort Sill has drawn into our community people from many different places throughout the world, and though many have left a soft impression as they landed briefly and moved on, others have stayed to influence the direction and personality of Lawton, Oklahoma.

Lawton's major employers are Fort Sill Army Facility and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra presents eight performances each year. Lawton Community Theatre has a minimum of 4 live performances per year. The Great Plains Museum and the Fort Sill Museum provide insight into the rich heritage of the American Indian & Southwestern culture. The 60,000 acre Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge located 20 miles Northwest of Lawton provides outdoor recreation, including water activities, hiking, climbing, camping and picnicking. Large herds of buffalo and Texas longhorn cattle along with various other animals may be seen on a visit there. The city of Lawton has 76 public parks, tennis courts, golf courses and 2 lakes.
