This bedroom community with a growing economic base is approximately 15 minutes from downtown Salem. It is nestled in a fertile valley at the foot of the Coast Mountain Range and is surrounded by rolling hills, green pastures and fir trees. Dallas is home to agriculture with its rich soil and mild temperatures and is known for its civic pride and volunteer spirit. Two miles north of Dallas is the 2,492 acre Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge. Hikers, photographers and nature lovers can enjoy viewing the nearly 200 species known to inhabit the refuge. Located in the middle of the city, this park is home to the city's Summerfest during the last full weekend of July and is also the site of the city's annual summer-long concert series showcased on the Rotary Performing Arts Stage. The park has amenities including covered picnic areas, towering trees, nature trails, a miniature Japanese garden, picnic sites and playground areas. East Dallas Community Park is home to the city's new aquatic center. There's also fishing at that park. along with soccer and softball fields, tennis courts and skateboard facility. The Dallas City Recreation Program offers a wide variety of classes, activities and facilities for residents. Through a partnership with the Dallas School District, gyms, track, ball fields and tennis courts are available to the public. Aerobics, martial arts training, weight lifting and exercise equipment are available through local clubs or the Chemeketa Community College's Dallas Center. Photo Courtesy of Polk County Itemizer-Observer The Polk County Museum houses and preserves the collections and exhibitions that tell the story of the pioneers, ranchers, farmers, loggers, teachers and leaders who settled and built in the region. The Dallas City Hall is a historic stone building nearing its 100 anniversary. Fine local wineries produce white, red, sparkling and dessert wines. Most wines are produced for export outside of the state. Twenty miles west of Dallas is the Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ronde. The casino offers 24-hour gaming, including blackjack, slot machines, video poker, bingo, keno and poker. The beautiful Polk County Courthouse still stands in the center of town as it did when it was built in 1899. The Muir & McDonald Co., Tanners, is the oldest operating tannery of its type west of the Mississippi. In business since 1863, the tannery is known for its quality saddle and tooling leather.
