Jefferson is located in the Willamette Valley in Marion County. Jefferson is located about 16 miles southeast of Salem, Oregon's capitol. Marion County is the largest producer of agricultural income among Oregon's 36 counties, making most towns here small pockets of urban life in the middle of farmland. Jefferson is a moderate sized town (for this region) with approximately 2,000 people. Jefferson is largely a rural, residential area with homes spread far apart, and a small downtown area that is currently undergoing an overhaul and transformation. Downtown has some commercial buildings that are considered historic and were built in the Victorian era. Some pre-date the Victorian period, and embody all the history of the region. This area has gently rolling hills, there are many streams and lakes as well. Mt. Jefferson, an inactive volcano is only about 20 minutes to the east, and forms an attractive backdrop for the town. There is plenty to do here for those who love the outdoors, from fishing, to swimming in one of the many crystal-clear lakes, to hiking in the Mt. Jefferson State Park. Golf is a popular activity too. There are several courses in the area, most of them public, and are well maintained. Tennis, biking, and skiing are all popular pastimes. The Oregon Coast is approximately 70 miles to the west. The Cascade Mountains are east along the North Santiam River. Further east is world-class skiing and year round recreation. People in Jefferson mostly work in the agricultural industry, however, Marion County's economy is also based on government, with 38 of the largest state agencies based here. That means more "urban" people, those who have never farmed, are finding Jefferson, and towns like it, an attractive alternative to big-city living. They can buy a house on a few acres, and have the best of both worlds, working in an urban environment, but living in the country. Climate is another reason why Jefferson is a popular place to live. Jefferson experiences all four seasons, but the winters tend to be mild and fairly short. The snow falls generally on the more mountainous regions, and seldom down in the valley area. Rain is the order of the day, and it falls most often in the winter. Summers tend to be mild and dry. Jefferson is a place of breathtaking beauty, of large, rural lots and an economy that is booming thanks to the state agencies that are based around the county. So, for the best of everything, recreation, weather, and cost of living, Jefferson is the place to be!
