Located in Columbia County

Rainier is located north of Portland, between Prescott and Clatskanie along US Hwy 30. Situated in Columbia County, this historic mill town is named for Mt. Rainier, visible to the northeast. George Vancouver, in turn, named the mountain, in 1792 for Rear-Admiral Peter Rainier of the Royal Navy.

The town was formerly known as Eminence. The name was changed to Rainier on 6 Jan 1852. The first post office of Eminence was established in 1851 with Charles E. Fox, the town's founder, as the first postmaster. Rainier is perfectly situated for a quick commute to Portland.

It was an important river town in its early days. Rainier is also the southern anchor of the Lewis and Clark Bridge, the only bridge over the Columbia River between Portland and Astoria. This bridge allows Northwest Oregon residents immediate access to Interstate 5 and all points north, such as Longview, Washington.
