Situated on the banks of the famed Columbia River, St. Helens is a quaint, picturesque town that reflects a proud heritage, steep in history. Mostly known for logging and fishing, St. Helens is the county seat and home of Oregon's only municipal marine park, Sand Island. The downtown district is a Nationally Registered Historic District with original structures over a century old.
The town of St. Helens is an affable mix of urban and rural, old and new, residential and industry. With close proximity to metro Portland, there is no lack of big city conveniences as well as adding to the cultural and social amenities. Well established neighborhoods feature tree-lined sidewalks and an impressive collection of architectural styles of old while new, carefully laid developments sport today's eclectic styles with open interiors and low maintenance yards. All are supported by the county's exemplary public school system along with several private institutions and those supporting various special needs programs.
Recreation is plentiful with the area's diverse terrain under the watchful eyes of majestic Mt. Hood, Mt. Adam, and Mt. St. Helens on the east and north sides. To the west lies a thick, lush forest of firs guarding the rugged, but spectacular Oregon coast, just an hour away from town. Outdoor activities include boating on the river, big salmon fishing, championship golfing, hiking, mountain biking, skateboarding (sweet!) and some of the Nation's best downhill skiing and snowboarding. Indoor activities include bowling, swimming, dancing, theatrics, shopping, and a vast array of educational and life enhancing classes. Other community resources include museums featuring the life and times of both natives and settlers, art galleries displaying a fabulous selection of local talent (one right inside the restored old train depot), a town library boasting of a huge collection of media as well as many community sponsored programs and services for all ages.
