Abington Township, Pennsylvania
Abington is one of the Montgomery county’s oldest communities dating back to before 1700. It was officially incorporated in 1704. Abington is home to some of the county’s oldest transportation routes, industries and churches. Today, Abington is considered a highly desirable residential community, containing a major shopping mall, many small businesses and a few of Montgomery County’s largest employers. Communities include Willow Grove, Roslyn, Glenside, Rydal, North Hills and Meadowbrook.
Public services consists of public water and sewer facilities for most properties; a large full-time police force; volunteer fire company; curbside residential trash disposal and recycling pick-up.
Recreation: Abington offers community parks, nature areas, a large number of public playgrounds, athletic fields, tennis courts and swimming pool.
Abington School District have been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Currently major renovations are being made at the High School. A new school district stadium is under construction as is a new middle school. Several district teachers were named semi-finalist for the 2000 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year.
Shopping: several community and neighborhood shopping facilities are located throughout the township. The nearest major mall is the Willow Grove Park Mall, located in the northwestern corner of the township.
