Boalsburg, Pennsylvania
Population: 2,200
Located in Centre County
Boalsburg is a quaint little village situated in Centre County, just off Route 322, in the picturesque foothills of the Alleghenies. It's only a dot on the map, and you as a casual driver might drive past it without even being aware that it is nestled there in the rolling valley beneath a coverlet of oaks and pines and cedars - were it not for a plain little marker by the side of the road: "Boalsburg. An American Village - Birthplace of Memorial Day." What about that boast?
It was an early fall day that Emma Hunter, Elizabeth Meyer, and Sophie Keller walked to the local cemetery and placed flowers and wreaths upon the graves of loved ones who had died in the service of their country during the Civil War. This simple act of love and tribute paid to the Soldiers of the Union, was the first time such honors were offered. It was the birth of Memorial Day. And it took place in the Village of Boalsburg, Centre County Pa, in October of 1864.
Twenty four places throughout the USA declare they were the founding place of Memorial Day, and to keep the peace, it was finally decided that a place in New York State would carry the "official" distinction, but Boalsburg residents remain convinced their town is the place!
Even if it isn't, there is much more to Boalsburg and the surrounding area than just this! Boalsburg is a beautiful, quaint place located right in the heart of the country. One side are the Appalachian Mountains, on the other, Rothrock State Forest, Tussey Mountains with its ski slopes and not far away is State College, a rather charming city with a vivid history to it.
There is plenty to do and see in this lovely little village. Several shops offer specialty items, including "A Basket Full" - A country gift shop located in an 1827 house in Boalsburg's historic district, it is packed full of country gifts and accessories. There are several taverns in the area, with a plethora of food choices for the discerning gourmet.
This is a small community and housing here tends to the historic, most homes are therefore older and well-established. Many of them appear on the local historic registry, so anyone purchasing one of these is limited in the type and style of upgrades they want to do. If however the charm of village life enthralls and enraptures you, this miniscule hamlet should be your first choice!
