Carlisle is the perfect small town. Blessed with great schools, both high schools and colleges, the students from this area are some of the finest in the nation. Having national merit students, being one of the top schools sending people to military academies, having the number one band in the world, and in the nation, holding four state basketball championships, are just a few of its accolades. There are no fewer than seven major colleges and or universities within a forty minute driving time. Carlisle, is not only Cumberland County’s Seat, but it is also home to the United States Army War College, Dickinson College and Dickinson School of Law of Penn State University. These excellent higher education facilities contribute to an excellent town/gown relationship. When visiting Carlisle, one only needs to stroll down the tree-lined streets and peer into its many unique shops, to experience the remarkable community-spirited atmosphere. Within the downtown, Carlisle offers some of the finest restaurants in South Central Pennsylvania. Many visitors are attracted to these restaurants for their wide array of cuisine, historic downtown locale, and most importantly the pleasant atmosphere. While strides have been made to rehabilitate and preserve properties of historical importance, Carlisle also has recognized the need to encourage a strong economically viable community. Most recently, several new retail developers have been welcomed to the neighborhood. With no state tax Carlisle has become a more than wonderful place to retire for military people as well as many others from different backgrounds. These people contribute to Carlisle's artistic and cultural events as well as its superior diversity. Harrisburg International airport is only 35 minutes from Carlisle and is the major airport for the center of PA. Hershey with its park, medical center, and many attractions is only 40 minutes away.
