Cheltenham, one of the oldest townships in Pennsylvania, was established in 1683. The township evolved in its early days as a center for commerce and industry. Today, it is considered a typical suburban residential community, where people settle to live and raise their their children. Communities include Cedarbrook, Melrose Park, Wyncote, La Mott, Cheltenham village and Elkins Park.

In 1997, Seventeen magazine rated Cheltenham High as a cool school, citing both academic excellence and student raves. 90% of graduates attend college, including Ivy League schools like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Brown and Penn.
Shopping: many neighborhood and specialty shopping centers. The nearest major shopping malls are the Cheltenham Square Mall, located in the township, and the Willow Grove Park Mall.
