Danville is located in Montour County, the smallest county, in terms of land area, in the state of Pennsylvania. The county was established in 1850, and was carved from Columbia County.
The Susquehanna River forms part of the county's southern border. The Borough of Danville lies along the river's northern banks. The Susquehanna played a large role in the early settlement of Danville and Montour County, providing transportation to and from a trading post known as Montgomery's Landing, the present-day site of Danville.
Historically Danville was a hub for manufacturing, especially in the ore-mining industry. This emphasis on manufacturing carries forward today, and continues to provide a substantial employment base in the city. Industries such as TRW, Merck Pharmaceuticals and others continue to thrive in the Danville area. The service industry is also strong in the county, with Geisinger Medical Center and related services providing a major portion of the employment base.

Both the Danville Municipal Building and the Montour County Courthouse are located in the downtown area. Knoebels Amusement Resort, located only 20 minutes away, is America's largest free admission amusement park. There are three golf courses (two public and one private) and two wildlife preserves within a short drive of the Danville area. Residents can enjoy everything from fishing and camping in the summer to skiing and ice skating in the winter.
