The Township use to have a large Native American population, and black bears were common here before 1800, when the last timber wolf in the area was trapped. Plumstead Township was probably named for Francis Plumstead, although there has been speculation it was named for one of the four Plumstead parishes in England, since the Plumstead name is always spelled without the "a".

Plumstead was an English iron monger who acquired 2,500 acres from William Penn in 1683 for a sum of 50 pounds. He supposedly never lived on the land he purchased. In 1715, there was an attempt by settlers to organize some 14,000 acres into a township, but the petition was never acted upon by the court. In 1725, a new petition was introduced to the court, received approval and the township of Plumstead was established.

Today people enjoy Plumstead for it's lovely villages, antiques shopping and lovely B&Bs.
