Pennsylvania Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Pottstown, Pennsylvania
Population: 21,831
Located in Montgomery County
Pottstown enjoys all the flavor of a small town, but residents are part of one of America's largest metropolitan areas. The borough is just an hour from Center City Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Airport, and major sports teams such as the Phillies and the Eagles. To the south and west is the beautiful Amish and Mennonite farm country of Chester, Berks, and Lancaster counties. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is 20 minutes away.
New York City is a little more than two hours away by car. Many residents drive to nearby Wescosville and take an express bus. Washington is a three-hour drive.
Within a half hour of Pottstown are several major parks, such as Valley Forge National Historic Park, French Creek State Park, and the Upper Perkiomen Valley Park of Montgomery County.
Though Pottstown was incorporated on February 6, 1815, it was settled many years before then in 1701 when an iron forge operated close to the town's present site. John Potts organized the borough on land deeded to his father by William Penn. The area has always had a large iron and steel industry. In 1980, both Bethlehem Steel and Firestone, larger employers in the area, pulled out and send the borough into a short-lived tailspin. Since that time, new business has been attracted by two large industrial parks. The historic district of Pottstown is also a drawing card for visitors and tourists.
Cultural and entertainment activities hold high priority in the region. We are fortunate that many activities are offered locally and that additional cultural opportunities abound less than an hour away in Philadelphia. The Pottstown Symphony Orchestra is an asset to our region. The emphasis is on classical music, and popular numbers are featured at the annual Spring Pops Concert. The orchestra performs concerts throughout the year in the Tri-County area. Montgomery County Community College offers an excellent series of concerts featuring professional performers from all areas of dance, music, and theater.
The Hill School’s Center for the Arts also offers many opportunities for the community to view a series of concerts, dance, and theater performances for people of all ages. The Schuylkill Valley Regional Dance Company, formed in 1971, features local talented performers in annual Spring and Christmas concerts. Special school programs are offered by the dance company and the symphony orchestra. The Coventry Players, The Coventry Singers, Sweet Adelines and the Barber Shop Quartets provide additional cultural opportunities for our residents. The Cornerstone of the Arts, Inc., is the local arts council for the region. The Cornerstone sponsors and supports many events throughout the year. For additional information you may contact the Chamber Office. There is an Artists’ Guild in Pottstown that meets on a monthly basis. We are also proud of the Community Spirit Band. The Owen J. Roberts Friends of the Arts sponsors art shows, Art Goes to School, children’s concerts, bus trips, and a holiday house tour along with a craft show and a garden tour.
