The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is an annual celebration of the visual and performing arts that takes place each July in downtown State College, Pennsylvania, and on the adjacent campus of The Penn State University. The Festival was founded in 1967 by Penn State’s College of Arts and Architecture and the State College Chamber of Commerce and attracts about 100,000 visitors to State College each summer. The Festival includes the nationally recognized Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition, two juried gallery shows, Images and Crafts National, Children and Youth Day, educational opportunities, and music dance and theatrical performances in a variety of traditional and non-traditional venues.

Hiking: Central Pennsylvania has some of the most scenic and challenging hiking trails in the northeast ranging from a little over a mile (Alan Seeger Trail) to hundreds of miles long (Mid-State Trail).

Skiing: You can test your skiing skills at Tussey Mountain Ski Resort which offers several slopes of varying difficulty, or you can snowboard in their snowboarding park. Skiers in State College are within 2 hours of various local resorts and within 3 hours of the Poconos, a large Eastern Pennsylvania ski area with 13 resorts. New York and New England skiing are also in close proximity.

Rock Climbing/Repelling: Since State College is so mountainous, you have your pick as to where you would like to rock climb or rappel.

The 4rth of July Fireworks: Ranked 4rth in the US for 4th of July shows, the fireworks show in State College is truely awe inspiring. They are 35-40 minutes of fireworks choreographed to music (to 1/10 of a second). 14,000 shells were used in 2001. If you work on the show or pony up some money, they let you sit close enough to see the lifting charges go off. Look around for a red shirt if you would like to volunteer, or check their web site. Otherwise, there are excellent seats all over State College, radiating from west of Beaver Stadium where it is shot from.

The PSU homecoming parade (sometime in October): The Homecoming parade is worth the time. Locals have said: "It's a great mix of small town shtick and big university diversity. Lots of fire engines and floats that are so bad they come around to being good." Downtown gets REALLY crowded and pretty crazy if you're new to town and don't want to stay for the whole show. Near the Thomas building on Pollack just along South Halls (park up by the Creamery and walk down) can be a better experience.
