West Deer Township is the third largest municipality in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania located approximately 15 miles north of Pittsburgh. Established in 1836 West Deer was originally part of Deer Township until its division in 1836.

West Deer is approximately 28 square miles or around 18,500 acres and has a population of approximately 11,500. It is mainly a suburban and rural area with some commercial and industrial businesses. West Deer is one of three municipalities in the Deer Lakes School District area.

There are two major recreational facilities in West Deer Township. One is a 94-acre municipal park, located in Bairdford. Bairdford Park was designed for active recreation such as, baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, sand volleyball court, picnic areas, playground equipment, and a large pavilion, which can be scheduled for family reunions, and even company picnics. Also located in West Deer Township is Deer Lakes Park, which is an Allegheny County-owned facility, but is more passive recreation, such as fishing, picnicking and hiking/trails.

It is no wonder West Deer is growing so fast! Close to Pittsburgh for a convenient commute, West Deer is still far enough to have a rural feel to it. The town works hard to keep it that way too; making sure that even though there is new construction underway, and is close to Pittsburgh, that there is plenty of open space around.

Being close to the Allegheny River helps too! There is so much to do in and on the river, and on its banks ? whether it is fishing, or boating, Allegheny is a popular place to spend some time. Pittsburgh itself is a hive of activity for culture, art, sports and recreation.

The Downtown area of Pittsburgh offers diverse cultural entertainment. For film buffs, The Harris Theater offers alternative and foreign films. If visiting downtown, a must-see is the Strip District. Another multi-ethnic community, the Strip is lined with fresh produce markets, wholesale stores, restaurants and coffee shops that hustle and bustle all day long.
