Charlestown, Rhode Island

Population: 7,859
Located in Washington County

Charlestown, with her 7 miles of beached and well-deserved popularity can no longer be said to be the "best kept secret in Rhode Island". Charlestown has turned from a sleepy hollow on the beach to a bustling small town with a thriving community and many new businesses springing up.

There used to be an air-base which was Charlestown initial "claim" to fame, but in 1974 the Base was closed. All 600 acres were divided into a U.S. Fish and Wildlife refuge and the town-owned Ninigret Park. Ninigret Pond, is a saltwater pond renowned as one of New England's best wind surfing areas.

The pond supports a great variety of wildlife, as does the adjacent Kimball Wildlife Refuge. Nearby Ninigret Park, situated on 172 acres, features picnic grounds, ball fields, a 10-speed bike course and tennis and basketball courts. The park also includes a three-acre, spring-fed swimming pond and the Frosty Drew Memorial Nature Center with walking trails on the park grounds.

There is also a lovely family beach at the spring-fed pond, a playground, a nature center, an astronomical observatory, a health/exercise track, and a Senior Citizens center. Nature abounds and there is an abundance of game birds and, often visible, are herds of wild deer.

Perhaps one of the best kept secrets is the three-mile-long East Beach, located near Charlestown's Ninigret Conservation Area. This remote, unspoiled barrier beach has sugar-white sand, gentle surf and clear, turquoise waters, all adjacent to Ninigret Park.

The Big Apple Circus delights children of all ages every July with its one-ring European-style circus held on the Ninigret Park grounds. Each August at Ninigret Park, the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Seafood Festival, a roll-up-your-sleeves feast featuring quahogs, clam chowder, clam cakes, lobster and other Rhode Island seafood specialties.

Charlestown is making sure that it doesn't; become so "overgrown" that it loses its small-town and welcoming feel to it. Housing is scarce, because the residents want to keep the integrity of the town intact, however, if you are able to buy either a house, or a piece of property, you will be welcomed with open arms! Charlestown is definitely a wonderful place to raise a family, or to write that book, or paint that masterpiece you've been dying to get to!
