From neighborhood parks, ball fields, and tennis courts to recreation centers, swim centers and a regional park on Lake Hartwell, there are always a variety of recreational activities and plenty of action-packed sports. Resting on the South Carolina-Georgia border is Lake Hartwell, one of the Southeast's largest recreational lakes. This man-made lake has over 1,000 miles of shoreline, 301 of which border Anderson County. Boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, camping and nature hiking can all be enjoyed at this scenic lake. The lake is surrounded by residential areas, marinas, boat launching facilities, camping grounds, picnic areas, state parks and rental cabins that make it a favorite destination for thousands of visitors. The Upstate boasts over 50 golf courses, 12 of which are located in Anderson County. Golf tournaments such as the Nike Classic and the Thornblade Classic, which draw an impressive list of professional golfers, entertain the golf enthusiasts of the Upstate. Anderson is home to one of the nation's largest hot-air balloon festivals: Pontiac's Freedom Weekend Aloft. Offering over 100 balloons from around the nation, big-name entertainment, arts and crafts, a midway and other attractions, the event draws over 200,000 people to the Anderson Co. Sports & Entertainment Center during Memorial Day Weekend each year. With over 40 shopping centers in the area, Anderson has many shopping options. The Anderson Mall, the largest of the shopping centers, features four department stores, a food court, movie theaters and over 90 specialty shops. The mall also hosts monthly talent and seasonal fashion shows. Less than a one-hour drive from Anderson is a haven for bargain hunters. Located in Commerce, Georgia, this outlet center is one of the largest in the Southeast. The Tanger Outlets I and II and The Commerce Factory Stores together offer over 150 shops filled with popular items at discount prices. The Gap, Calvin Klein, Nike, Nautica and Lennox are a sample of well-known brands found there. The Pottery is another popular destination within the outlet complex. Shoppers looking for housewares crystals and linens, collectibles and, of course, pottery will find more than enough to chose from in this 150,000 - square foot - facility. Its newest addition is the Pottery Plant, which has 11 acres of walking trails and 30 greenhouses. Anderson County has five school districts with an average composite SAT score of 975. T.L. Hanna is rated the top high school in the state according to the Palmetto's Finest Competition. The County System is committed to fostering education, with several progressive programs: a cultural student/teacher exchange with sister schools in Europe; a gifted and talented program for middle and high school students; and a technology initiative, planning for Internet access in every classroom.
