Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Originally named Kingston, the town was created in 1734 as part of the Royal Governor Robert Johnson's Township Scheme. Conway's past has been proudly preserved. The historic sites trails map lists 39 historic sites, significant buildings, and distinctive homes. Seventeen of these sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Conway has also earned the distinctions of A City of Character and Tree City USA. Conway originally brought settlers into the area, it supported the plantation homes and farms of the area, and still today one of the most intriguing aspects of Conway is its river, The Waccamaw. By the 1820's, Conway borough was a bustling riverport. Though society does not depend on the river to survive anymore, the beautifully built riverwalk is there for enjoyment of one and all. Recreational boats are often seen running up and down the calm waters. The Horry County School District is a county-wide school system, serving a county of 208,311 people along the Atlantic coastline of northeastern South Carolina. A twelve-member Board of Education, elected from single-member districts, governs the school district, with the chairman being elected at-large. The Superintendent is appointed by the Board. Horry County Schools has been recognized as a national leader in technology. All classrooms are networked to the Internet. The ratio of students to computers is just over 5:1. The use of wireless labs is expanding. A $173 million building program is nearing completion that will add 10 new schools and make additions and renovations to nine others.
