One cannot box Folly Beach into a neat description because Folly can mean entirely different things to different people. But Folly Beach is the real thing. A true beach town, it has long been called "The Edge of America" for its village center is the end of the one road from the mainland. Cross the bridge to Folly and you're no longer part of mainland life, you're next to it all on an island with its own laid back culture and pace. Though only 15 minutes to downtown Charleston and its treasure trove of things to do and see, Folly has its own way of life with its own sights and sounds and its own array of vacation kinds of things to do. It is, to many, the ideal beach-home beach for it is a perfect blend of quiet family beach homes, adventurous beach atmosphere and easy excursions to a grand historic city. Stay on the coast around Folly and you can enjoy six miles of wide sandy beaches with plenty of great swimming, surfing, sun and sea breezes. Cruise up to Center Street for laid back restaurants, Shag dancing, beach wear shopping or a walk on the pier. Take your boat out from the local boat ramp, gas up at the marina and spend a fun day poking around the creeks or harbor-you'll soon find where to fish, crab or shrimp. Watch the gas gauge, for if you care to, there are hundreds of miles of creeks to explore. Homes are not easily sold or bought here, and many of the residences are used as second homes, or beach homes for those who want weekend getaways. There are a handful of parcels of land, but the land comes with a high price tag and the houses have to be built to exact specifications, with no deviations. Most homes sell for upwards of one million dollars and operate on a $50,000 annual budget, on top of that. Though steeped in its traditions, Folly Beach is moving in a good direction. One can tell it is saving the best of its past, while adding a few ideas to make the island more attractive. The folks of Folly Beach know they have a good thing, and a way of life few ever enjoy. The islanders will have their way - protecting their culture and their small town life. Under their care, a proper and measured renaissance is unfolding. There are no plans to change what Folly Beach is, just to make it even better.
