Georgetown, South Carolina

Population: 9,517
Located in Georgetown County

South of Pawleys Island and at the foot of the Grand Strand is Georgetown, a one time rice plantation and shipping community that is often called Little Charleston. With a Revolution War era flavor, the quaint cobblestone streets and its well-preserved two centuries old churches and homes, the flavor of the town really is colonial. A bell towered Rice Museum dominates the center of town and features exhibits that track the antebellum history of the plantation heyday.

As the state's third oldest city, Georgetown dates back to 1729 when the town was laid out by Elisha Screven. The four-by-eight block grid is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A bustling seaport in colonial times, tall masted sailing ships laden with goods from Europe docked here and left with the trade products of the low country - indigo in the mid 1700's and rice, cotton and lumber in later years.

The Tidelands of Georgetown offer the opportunity to travel down a trail of history that weaves its magic through marshes, beaches, ports of call and a way of life far too tranquil (yet turbulent) to be forgotten. Here the motto is, "Where no one is ever in a hurry". Make a relaxing escape browsing through stories of rice and indigo, time and tides, fact and fancy. Comb the beaches, sail the waters, meander on the harbor walk and explore the plantations.

Georgetown has been a working seaport for more than 250 years linking much of the area's history and culture to the sea. To keep the history and tradition alive, Georgetown holds an annual Wooden Boat Show. This is intended to give both visitors and residents an understanding and appreciation of this rich maritime heritage.

For a slice of heaven like Georgetown, one would expect to pay a high price, but nothing could be further from the truth! A traditional style Cape Cod, shutters and all, with three bedrooms, and a dock in the backyard sells for around $170,000. If you are willing to be a little further inland, the prices reduce even more, and a large traditional style colonial sells for $150,000. There is some new construction in the area, and there are large "southern style estates" on the market for $500,000 and up.

Georgetown has been rated among the top 100 small towns in America in the two most recent ratings by Norman Crampton. It is not hard to see why! Georgetown is the place you have been looking for. If you are looking for peace, quiet, tranquility and a place to call home, this is it!
