South Carolina Real Estate & Relocation Guide

Mayesville, South Carolina

Population: 1,001

Located in Sumter County

The motto of the town and indeed the whole county can be summed up in a quote from H.G. Wells who says, "The past is but the beginning of a beginning and all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn."

Mayesville is located about 7 miles east of Sumter, the county seat of Sumter County. Over 100 industries have operations here, which has created many stable jobs and also helped the county maintain a strong economy.

Sumter is more than industry and statistics, however. Residents enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Swan Lake Iris Gardens, home to 75 swans and six million irises. Recently, Japanese officials, and South Carolina government officials, helped secure the last pair of swans, making Swan Lake- Iris Gardens the only place in the world with all eight known species of swans in the world. Linked to the Orient from beauty to business, Japan and Sumter have been holding hands across the Pacific for over seventy years, thus having a profound impact on the quality of life of others.

Golfers can enjoy year-round play at 38 area golf courses. Hikers take advantage of the Palmetto Trail, a 326-mile path through the state. Eight miles of this trail, called the High Hills of Santee passage, cuts through Sumter County and the Manchester State Forest.

Then there is the Santee Cooper lake system, Lakes Marion and Moultrie, with 156,000 acres and 450 miles of shoreline for fishing and boating. Sumter has more than a dozen public parks, and there are tennis courts, jogging paths, athletic fields and picnic areas throughout the community.

The area's mean annual temperature is perfect 64 degrees. Annual precipitation of only 47 inches means lots of sunny days. Sumter enjoys four distinct seasons, with short, mild winters, lush springs, long, warm summers, and sunny, colorful autumns.

With all of this you would expect to spend a lot of money to move and then to live here. Nothing can be further from the truth! The cost of living in this area is one of the lowest in South Carolina, and indeed throughout the rest of the United States. Homes here can sell for as little as $45,000 although you can also spend more if your budget allows.

Mayesville is a wonderful place to live because of the short commute to work in Sumter. There is plenty of fresh air and wide open spaces to enjoy here too! Mayesville is one place that has its sights firmly set on the future - why not come and see how you can be a part of that future!
