Powdersville is a rapidly growing suburban community of about 16,000 residents in Anderson County's northern corner. If it were incorporated, Powdersville would be the county's second largest city. Powdersville has been a hotbed of residential growth for the past two decades. It borders both Greenville and Pickens counties and its location makes the community especially attractive to those who commute to jobs in Greenville County. Powdersville's schools are known for their academic excellence. Anderson School District 1 traditionally scores among the state's best on standardized tests and the SAT. Hunt Meadows Elementary School has just opened and a second Powdersville elementary school is planned for 2002. Several doctor and dentist offices are located in Powdersville and Greenville Memorial Hospital is just minutes away. Powdersville is developing its own business center with restaurants, grocers, pharmacies and other stores. For even more shopping, Powdersville residents are just a few miles from Easley and Greenville's malls. More than 2,000 children participate in youth sports through programs offered by the Wren Youth Association and the Tri-County Soccer Association. There is one major park complex - Hurricane Springs Park - in the area and recreation officials are working to find a site for a second. Fire protection is provided by the volunteer Powdersville Fire Department. Pelzer Rescue Squad has a substation in the Powdersville Volunteer Fire Department and covers the Powdersville area. All EMS systems in Anderson County have at least one paid crew available. The Anderson County Sheriffs Office provides police protection. A large number of churches of various denominations can be found in the community. Because it is unincorporated, Powdersville does not have its own government. But with the expansion of the Anderson County Council to seven seats, Powdersville will get its own representative on that governmental body. A county government annex has also been opened, allowing Powdersville residents to take care of county business closer to home.
