As you travel north-west of Greenville, just before you get to Sumter National Forest, you will pass the sleepy, small village/town of Salem, a community of 126 souls. Salem is part of "The Golden Corner of South Carolina." This village is in the northern quadrant of South Carolina and has its own beauty, from waterfalls, to forests and lovely lakes chock-full of fish.

Probably the most famous falls in this region are the Lower Whitewater Falls. These falls cascade a spectacular 200 feet down a rock face in the Jocassee Gorges area. The falls are surrounded by evergreen and deciduous trees and make for an excellent fall color scene.

Things have changed here over the years, agriculture is probably the one thing that has undergone the greatest transformation. Farms have changed from row crops to livestock and poultry production. Oconee County is generally recognized as the principal apple-producing county in the state of South Carolina.

Salem, located in the heart of Oconee County is served by the Oconee School District which prides itself on its excellent teachers, support staff, schools and curriculum. There are great opportunities for students to further their education at several universities and colleges in the immediate area.

Housing here is definitely more rural, with large tracts of land between many of the homes. However with the changing face of the area, Salem is beginning to pick up new families whose requirements are not the same as they were even 50 years ago. Choice might be limited now, but the future holds limitless choices.
