Located in Union County
Dakota Dunes, South Dakota Originally named after the Sioux Dakota Indians in the mid 1800's, today South Dakota is best known as the location for the famous Mt. Rushmore. Union County is situated on the border of South Dakota and Iowa.
Recreation is abounds as Union County offers several scenic trails for hiking or biking. The city of Beresford is home to Union Grove State Park. This state park houses a unique arboretum with over 180 different species of trees, shrubs, and plant life.
Some of this plant life is considered exotic and other plant life is considered native to South Dakota in this arboretum. Other amenities in Union Grove include hiking trails, horseback riding, camping (both rustic and non-rustic), and day use facilities. If golfing is your game, there are several area golf courses with rolling hills and challenging greens that will satisfy any golfer.
Elk Point is the county seat of Union County and is located just 15 miles from Sioux City Iowa. History records that Lewis and Clark actually made camp right in or near Elk Point in August of 1804. In the 1990's Elk Point experienced a growth surge due to new businesses along the 75-mile stretch between Sioux City & Sioux Falls South Dakota.
Within the last 10 years, Elk Point boasts new housing developments, a new WelLife facility for senior citizens, a new 4000,000 gallon water tower and a new $8 million public school designed to better meet the needs of the Elk Point students. More community-oriented goals are in order for Elk Point as they look forward to renovating and preserving their historic main street corridor, advancement of the electric and water system and improvement of the city parks.
The city of Beresford is also a growing community within Union County. Within the last 6 years, 6 major companies have put locations in Beresford including those in the trucking industry and restaurant industry.
Beresford has 3 schools. 1 elementary, 1 middle school and 1 high school with small teacher to student ratios. Living is affordable in Beresford as average housing is $80,000 range. Community life is important to this town and it shows with their emphasis on recreation. With facilities including a swimming pool, public tennis courts, gun club, skating rinks, sand volleyball, a wellness center and much more, Beresford has something to offer everyone.
For those who enjoy a touch of the past, the Union County Museum is also located in Elk Point. There is even a diagram of the county where historical points of interest or shown enabling every visitor to get an idea of what the county was like in days gone by. Because some important landmarks are either privately owned, or may not even be in existence, this makes for quite an interesting tour. Providing background information on the various towns that make up Union County and giving a peek at what the past was like is the focus of this quaint museum.
