Malden is a city of opportunities. It is a community that boasts a strong commitment to education, close-knit neighborhoods, great recreational amenities and an active business community. In recent years, we have made much progress--new schools, new open space, historic landmarks and beautification efforts. There is a renewed sense of pride in this community of some 56,000 persons. Let's reflect on some of our accomplishments. Since 1996, Malden has opened five new K-8 schools. All are state-of-the-art technology-infused schools which will help us prepare our students for the jobs of the new economy. We have also worked aggressively to push forward plans to build TeleCom City, a forward-thinking joint economic development initiative with our sister cities of Everett and Medford, that will allow some 7,500 area residents to prosper in the growing industry of telecommunications. Not only have there been great gains in education and economic development, but there continues to be a strong commitment to neighborhood improvement projects. Financing programs offered in partnership with local banks, for example, have enabled homeowners to upgrade, preserve and even purchase residential properties. Federal, state and private funding sources have also been utilized to upgrade and even increase the amount of open space available for both active and passive use by our residents. Two new recreational amenities have come on line including the opening of the city's first ice skating rink in the downtown area and the creation of a new passive recreational area on the site of the old Lincoln School known as Lincoln Commons. Additionally, construction will soon get underway on a new state-of-the-art $8 million Malden YMCA. Additionally, new housing initiatives are under way to restore two of Malden's older school buildings into residential condominiums (the Belmont and Glenwood Schools) with 10 percent set aside for affordable home ownership. Malden continues to be poised for great progress as it moves these various new initiatives forward. As always, we remain committed to keeping Malden a great place to live, work and raise a family. - Mayor Richard C. Howard
