Saco, Maine

Population: 16,822
Located in York County

Saco, Maine is unique among the towns along the southern coast of Maine. The twin communities of Biddeford and Saco are among the most scenic in New England. For centuries in pre-historic times, the dramatic falls of the Saco River near where it now crosses Main Street attracted summer visits from the Native people for seasonal fishing and hunting.

Islands in the Saco River separate the two towns where you will find acres of red brick mill buildings, one was a power factory, using the resources of the Saco River. These have since been turned into historical visiting places.

Turn of the century architecture makes for a lovely downtown shopping experience. Saco beams with a vibrant historical past. It is an area twice blessed by ten miles of riverfront and another 10 miles of shoreline.

The gentle, rolling terrain of Biddeford-Saco meets the Atlantic Ocean at several exquisite beach communities: Biddeford Pool, Hills Beach and Fortunes Rocks on the Biddeford side; Camp Ellis, Ferry Beach, Bay View and Kinney Shores on the Saco side.

Attractive homes, from restored colonials to contemporary designs, grace the countryside on both sides of the Saco River. Many of the homes are on the Historical Register of Maine and have been lovingly restored and maintained. The newer homes lie on the outskirts of the town, and most of them are built on large tracts of land. Housing is reasonably priced, the average 2,500 square foot home will run from $200,000 to $350,000 depending on the size of the plot.

Saco River is one of the best in the Northeast, providing an endless variety of recreational opportunities, from fishing (both summer and winter), and boating, to water-skiing. Saco is also home to the Number One Tourist Attraction in Maine - Funtown Splashtown, an amusement park that offers "dry and wet" rides! It opens in May and closes in the fall, but what fun is to be had there.

In 1805 the town dropped the weighty and difficult to spell name, Pepperrell Borough, in favor of the simpler ancient name, Saco. Most people were relieved!

Saco has a rich history, and as the city expands from the 17,000 residents it has now, it looks keenly ahead to the future - why not be a part of that future and come and see Saco holds for you, you will be glad you did!
