Hobbs, New Mexico

Population: 28,657
Located in Lea County

Hobbs is located in Lea County on the southeast corner of New Mexico, 5 miles from the Texas border. Hobbs was founded in 1907 as an agricultural and ranching community and became prominent after the discovery of oil in 1928. Today, Hobbs has nearly 30,000 residents and is known as the oil capital of New Mexico.

Numerous oil and gas wells are scattered throughout the area and this industry is one of the principal sources of revenue for Hobbs. Ranching is an important industry in Lea County where approximately 90 percent of the county is rangeland for cattle, sheep and horses. Farming also contributes to the area's economy.

The climate for Hobbs is mild. The spring is usually dry and windy. Summers are quite warm with rain and thunderstorms until September. The fall brings less rain and cooler nights. Winters are usually mild with little rain. Real winter weather rarely comes and when it does it is late in the season.

Hobb's main attraction is two fold - first of all, the housing. There are many affordable houses in the area, and you can buy a beautiful, comfortable 3 bedroom ranch with 1,700 square feet for under $90,000. The most expensive homes in this area are in the $300,000 region, so Hobbs is definitely a realistic option for families in all income levels.

Secondly, Hobbs is strategically placed on the New Mexico/Texas border with a straight commute to points east and west of it. So although there are quite a few employment opportunities in this small town, commuting outside of Hobbs is made easy.

The "Main Street Hobbs" committee has been working with local historians to establish a small museum in the downtown area in the future. There is so much history in Hobbs that people do not know about and it is believed a downtown museum would be a big asset to our community. The Main Street will once again become the main attraction for this town that has been around for almost a century, although much of the surrounding area shows habitation much older than that.

This is a town that is still very community oriented, and the newsletter sent to the residents carries a very personal touch, with thank you notes from residents and birth announcements. This is certainly a place where everyone knows your name! If community, and togetherness is what you value, then Hobbs is where you should be!
