Lacey, Washington

Population: 31,226
Located in Thurston County

For decades, Lacey was the place to go for summer fun. Horse racing enthusiasts flocked to Woodland (Lacey) from all over the northwest to watch the horse races and relax at the lake resorts. Many of these resorts emerged during the 1910's, when residents on Hicks and Pattison Lakes opened their homes to guests. With the invention of the automobile, Lacey became easily accessible to many more people in Thurston County and the mid-1920's saw an explosion in the growth of resorts in Hicks, Long, Pattison and Southwick Lakes. By 1926, there were seven resorts on Hicks Lake alone.

The resorts offered a variety of activities: swimming, fishing, boating, picnicking, camping, high dives, water courts and baseball. There were also campgrounds away from the lake such as the Log Cabin Camp and the Travis Campground. Golfers could enjoy playing on the nearby Mountain View Golf Course, now the site of Panorama City.

Typical summer afternoon temperatures range in the seventies and low eighties, with average winter temperatures in the forties. Average annual precipitation is 50 inches with snowfall averaging 19 inches. In 1997, the total precipitation was 65.8 inches.
