Brookfield, Wisconsin

From early history to a prosperous suburban community of today Brookfield has a quiet residential character resulting from low density development and a strong pride in home ownership. Spacious lots create semi-rural neighborhoods, where a blend of beautiful new residences and established homesteads that date back to the early part of the 20th century are available. However, Brookfield is a large community, covering over 27 square miles. It is one of the largest, fastest-growing residential and most populous communities in Waukesha County.

Brookfield offers a tremendous convenience to a very rich and diversified shopping just minutes away on Blue Mound Road, Brookfield's major commercial district. Regional shopping malls include Brookfield Square and Mayfair Mall. There is also a business center. Bishop's Woods and Brookfield Lakes Corporate Center are among the many office parks. Job opportunities are available at all levels nearby in a high growth and low unemployment environment. The median income is $95,734.

Brookfield is served by two school districts: Elmbrook and Waukesha. Education in the Elmbrook school district has excelled in student achievement. The academic proficiency at the high school level is noteworthy with students scoring above both the state and national averages for SAT and ACT scores. Of the 25 largest metro area school districts, Elmbrook continues to invest the largest amount of money per student while maintaining the lowest property tax rates in the state. There are seven elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools and one special education school at the Elmbrook School District. The student/teacher ratio in Elmbrook School District for primary schools is 15; and secondary is 10. 83% of Elmbrook School District graduates plan on attending college. In the primary schools of Waukesha School District, the student/teacher ratio is 15, while the secondary schools have a ratio of 16. 58% of Waukesha School District graduates plan on attending college.

Early Settlement Historic Building, Dousman-Dunkel Stagecoach inn (see photo), shows history before the civil war in the area. This was a stagecoach inn on a wood plank road called Watertown Plank Road that went to Watertown, Wisconsin. This was build on the original site of Watertownplank Road probably by Michael Dousman, (1774-1854) a fur trader and entrepreneur from Mackinac, Michigan. Operated as a stagecoach inn from 1857 to 1872 by Daniel Brown, a Connecticut Yankee, and ceased operation with the coming of the railway in 1873. This is truly a showplace of Greek Revival Style and because of its stately appearance, it is on the Historic America Building Survey as well as on the National Register of Historic Places.

To sum it up, Brookfield is one of the best choices of communities to live in in southeast Wisconsin.
