Fairmont, West Virginia
Population: 19,097
Located in Marion County
Nestled away in the rolling hills of North Central West Virginia along side the Monongahela, Tygart and West Fork Rivers, is the City of Fairmont. Fairmont is the county seat of Marion County and with a population of just over 20,000 it is the largest municipality in Marion County. The City of Fairmont has experienced a strengthening economy during the past few years with new job creation and growth, particularly in the fields of high technology. Fairmont has created the only high technology business park in West Virginia, fostering research and development in fields such as automation, imaging and aerospace. The revitalization of Fairmont's past is the key to its future. Reconstruction of the High-Level Bridge establishes a commitment to preserve the values that have long made the City of Fairmont "The Community of Choice." The Fairmont Community Development Partnership works to maintain and rebuild neighborhoods within Fairmont. This housing acts as an incentive for present and future homeowners who want to buy or refurbish an older home. This makes sense as new subdivisions built further from the city limits means a strain on the municipal services. Fairmont is very proud of the impact this Partnership is having, and have saved several homes of historical importance. One home that was saved is "High Gate". The magnificent mansion, carriage house and gardens were built by James Watson in 1908. The Watson estate is a beautiful multi-gabled structure located along one side of the eight hundred block of Fairmont Avenue. The Carriage House is privately owned today by Friends of High Gate, Inc. The building was purchased and restored and is used today for various civic activities. Education has always been a prime focus for the City of Fairmont. Fairmont State College combines the finest educational opportunities with small town personality, friendliness and safety for over 6,500 students. Recreation is also showcased here in Fairmont. Area attractions include museums, state parks, whitewater rafting, county music shows, mountain biking, rail trials for hiking, fairs and festivals and cultural events. Tranquil mountain views surround Fairmont and historic sites add a flavor of West Virginia hospitality that makes Fairmont "The Friendly City." Several parks of note are Morris Park, a beautifully rustic wooded park perfect for walking or nature watching. Windmill Park, which was once used as the area fairgrounds this park is situated on more than 20 acres overlooking the Monongahela River. The park is currently home to youth soccer and men's softball leagues. Fairmont is rightly proud of Veteran's Plaza, a lovely downtown centerpiece which was completed during 1999. This project is a joint partnership between the City of Fairmont and the Military Veteran's Council. If you are looking for a tranquil spot to fish or for raging whitewater, you must visit Valley Falls State Park. This beautiful natural treasure offers a primitive and relaxing atmosphere for those desiring to picnic, hike, fish or mountain bike. Although the rock formations and water are beautiful, they are also dangerous, so swimming is not permitted. Come and be a part of the Renaissance that Fairmont is undergoing, and enjoy all this fine city had to offer to all residents. Find homes for sale in Fairmont West Virginia
