Coming in slightly ahead of neighboring Williamson County to the northwest, Rutherford County has been one of the fastest-growing areas in the nation. Residents have been attracted by the double whammy of more houses and more land for the money- a benefit that may erode as property becomes more scarce. New industries in recent years, including the giant Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corporation USA in Smyrna, have created booming economy. Murfreesboro, with about 50,000 residents, in particular is enjoying a big growth spurt.

While the city boasts an easy commute to Nashville, many residents are employed in town or in other Rutherford County businesses. The city is home to Tennessee's third largest higher education institution, Middle Tennessee State University. Houses start in the $75,000 range and climb to $375,000 in mostly new developments.

One growing trend is the renovation of Murfreesboro's historic downtown district, which has been led by longtime residents, as it was in Franklin.
