Athens officially opened the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in November 1996. This world class facility is an innovative aquarium and hatchery complex with over 300,000 gallons of aquaria and home to "Texas Star" a 20+ pound largemouth bass.

Local burger chef, Fletcher Davis represented Athens at the world's fair in 1904 and introduced his hamburgers to the world. Athens celebrates each year with the Fletcher Davis Hamburger Cook-off. Another festival held each year in July is the Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree, celebrating Athens heritage in agriculture, paying tribute to the black-eyed pea.
