Texas Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Buda, Texas
Population: 2,404
Located in Hays County
Buda, located 17 miles south of Austin, just off the I35, is a quiet city of approximately 1,700 resident, but is becoming one of the fastest growing communities in South Texas. It acquired its name in an interesting manner. Before 1887 it was known as De Pre, but at the request of the post office department, the name was changed to Buda. The name derives from Spanish viuda, or widow. The town had gained a reputation as a popular eating stop for rail travelers, and the name may refer to a pair of widows who cooked at the Carrington Hotel in the 1880s.
Buda offers plenty of annual events for residents and visitors to enjoy. It is only fitting that Buda, "the antique capital of Texas," has an event that showcases antiques - Budafest. The event also provides arts and crafts fun, food and entertainment to attendees. Red, White and Buda is another worthy family festival.
For elementary through High School, students in Buda receive education from the Hays Consolidated Independent School District. And for tertiary education there are plenty of universities and colleges within 60 miles of Buda. These include the University of Texas at Austin, St. Edward's University, Texas State University, Austin Community College, University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio College and Trinity University.
Hamilton Pool, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, Pedernales Falls State Park and McKinney Falls State Park offer stimulating outdoor alternatives. Hamilton Pool is a favorite hiking, swimming and picnicking destination. At the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, visitors can explore the history of the 36th President while touring his ranch. Biking, fishing, hiking and wildlife watching are also available at the park.
Buda is still mostly a rural area, with many ranches handling mostly livestock. But, for those residents who are not farmers, the commute to Austin is fairly short, and some even drive to San Antonio for work.
Prices for Buda's single-family homes range from the low $100,000's in areas like Bonita Vista to the low $300,000's for large estate properties in areas like Ruby Ranch. Some homes for sale feature lake, river or creek frontage and/or city views. Buda also has plenty of land and lots available for custom building.
Buda provides year round recreation as winter is barely a blip on the weather map this far south! Come and see why this region of the country is one of the fastest growing, once you get here, you will fall in love and never want to leave!
