Corinth, Texas
Population: 11,325
Located in Denton County
Corinth, Texas
Corinth was established in 1880 as a result of the Dallas & Wichita Railway. And, like many of the lakeside communities in southern Denton county, lay dormant until skyrocketing growth in the 1990s. (Ironically, though a part of the Lake Cities, Corinth has no lakeside property.)
Corinth has a few features that should be attractive to prospective Lake Cities residents or businesses. The first: Location, Location, Location! Corinth, like Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek, and Shady Shores, is located just off Interstate 35-East; and any point in town can be reached in a matter of minutes. Denton, which backs up against Corinth's city limits, is minutes away (or a stone's throw, depending upon the location); and Lewisville is 10 minutes away. With the exception of rush-hour gridlock common on I-35E these days, Dallas can be reached in about 25 minutes.
Despite all the hype about growth, Corinth is still relatively small by Metroplex standards, so the town also has more of a small town identity - particularly attractive to newcomers looking for the suburban life of outdoor barbecues, soccer games and homeowners' associations. Corinth has unfortunately lost some of its rustic identity; but with an expected buildout of only 27,000 it will probably escape major urban crisis such as might be found in Plano or Carrollton.
In terms of projected growth rates city planners expect growth to taper substantially by 2010, down to about two percent. As it is about 65 percent of residential space is built or under construction.
But Corinth isn't only a bedroom community - though not quite to the scale of residential, commercial development within the last few years has been impressive. Commercial development efforts will likely increase over the next several years in order to keep the burden of city operating expenses off of homeowners.
To date Corinth has received a number of corporate endorsements - Boeing Air and Space, three auto dealerships, a State Farm Insurance regional office, a 55,000 square-foot Albertson's shopping center (Kensington Square) and the 70-acre CoServ utility and cable provider. This only represents one area of town; the city still has developable area on the eastern side of I-35E. Commercial development is expected to be generous along the nicknamed "Corinth Loop," a four-lane divided highway about two-thirds complete. The lop will also be the way to city hall and the new park.
Corinth's institute of higher learning, and a commercial anchor for the eastern side of town, resides in North Central Texas College, a two-year technical and vocational school, with a 3,000-plus student body, which opened for classes in January 2000. The 75,000 square-foot campus features state of the art computer labs, classrooms and research aides; through an agreement with the city Corinth residents can use many campus resources for free. Corinth, like Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek and Shady Shores, is also a 15-minute drive to the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University - two of the largest schools in the Metroplex.
In terms of leisure activities, the signature element of Corinth is its 116-acre Community Park. Selected portions of the park are already being used, and the final product will be home to a variety of amenities soccer, softball and baseball fields, nature trails, concessions, and a wetland/wildlife area. Building on Community Park is expected to be finished by 2002.
Children who live in southern Corinth attend the Lake Dallas Independent School District schools; children hailing from northern Corinth attend Denton schools. Currently only LDISD campuses reside within Corinth city limits, though a Denton elementary school will be built along Post Oak Road.
