Decatur, Texas

Population: 5,000

Located in Wise County

Decatur has been one of the best kept secrets in North Texas! It's just 30 miles north of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and less than an hour from DFW International Airport. The town is located at the intersection of Highways 380 and 287 with easy access to Interstate 35. Many residents easily commute to Denton, Dallas or Fort Worth while enjoying the qualities of small town life.

The town was originally named Taylorsville after The Mexican War hero General Zachary Taylor, but was changed in 1958 to honor Stephen Decatur, Revolutionary War naval hero. "The Father of Decatur", however, is known to be Absolam Bishop who settled the area earlier and raised a flag on the hill where the beautiful Wise County Courthouse now stands.

There are many attractions throughout the city including the Wise County Heritage Museum, the LBJ Grasslands which are a haven for outdoorsmen, Decatur's Downtown Square and Main Street and many other historical and recreational sites. Community amenities include four schools, twenty-seven churches representing nine denominations, Decatur Municipal Airport, a public library, senior citizens center, five private clinics, a fifty-bed hospital and more.

Decatur is a unique city with virtually no traffic problems, a safe environment for children and a special community culture. Come to Decatur and discover the reasons that locals stay and new arrivals never want to leave!
