Deer Park, also known as "The Birthplace of Texas" is a quiet community located approximately 20 miles southeast of Houston and approximately 50 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. Population is estimated to be 30,000 residents.
Deer Park, in the industrial section of central Harris County, was named for the private park for deer that formerly occupied the site. The subdivision was established in 1893 and was the site of a Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway station by about 1894. The town floundered for a while and the population dropped at one time to 25!
By 1946, however, the area began to flourish, as Deer Park became the site of refineries and toluol plants for the production of TNT. The local Shell plant alone produced ten million gallons of toluol annually.
During World War II the United States Maritime Commission contracted with the Houston Shipbuilding Corporation, a subsidiary of Todd Shipyards, to establish a $5 million yard at Irish Bend, near Deer Park; and this caused another population explosion, causing the town to expand educational opportunities in 1961 and municipal recreational facilities in 1964. In conjunction with surrounding communities, Deer Park has supported San Jacinto Junior College since its opening in 1961.
Deer Park celebrated its 110th birthday in February 2002. Mr. West's dream of a "Community of Opportunity" has been realized. Today, Deer Park has approximately 9,000 homes and more than 30,000 residents. With a city hall; a library; community theater; municipal court building; two fire stations; numerous parks and recreational facilities; several hotels; and 14 major industries as well as several smaller light industrial companies Deer Park is growing and proud.
The Deer Park ISD consists of 14 campuses; seven elementary schools, four junior high campuses, and a high school complex that includes three separate campuses. The Deer Park ISD received the status of a Recognized District in the 2002 school year.
There are several colleges near the City of Deer Park. Nearby universities, include the University of Houston, Houston Baptist University, St. Thomas University and the University of Texas. Junior colleges include San Jacinto College, Lee College, and Houston Community College.
With so much to offer, is it any wonder then that Deer Park has grown so much in the last few years? Why not come and be a part of this vibrant community? Present residents are always ready to welcome the newcomers and show them "round town"!
