DeSoto, Texas

First discovered in the 1500's by Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto, the town was probably named for a more recent colorful local physician, Dr. Hernandez DeSoto Steward. The city was incorporated in 1949 with a population of 200. Today has as grown to over 37,000 residents. The reason? A unique perspective on living well.

DeSoto is a place you'll want to stay for a long time. Luxury homes are built on rolling hills along spring fed creeks. The school district is worthy of pride; stressing excellence in student performance and a well-balanced curriculum for young people at every grade level. DeSoto is served by five local shopping centers, more than 20 churches, an extensive park system and a wide variety of restaurants. DeSoto's newly renovated Town Center municipal complex contains a civic center designed to provide space for receptions, meetings, and conferences. Also located within the Town Center complex is the Public Library, City offices, Recreation Center, Amphitheater, Chamber of Commerce, Visitor Information Center and the newly completed Corner Theater. DeSoto provides a different slant to our contemporary lifestyles- the return to the low crime, small town closeness that makes life more meaningful, merged with the richness of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

In DeSoto the crickets talk, the stars are polished and people make you feel at home. It's big city living with the wisdom and security of a small town! DeSoto's country setting of friendly people, light traffic and natural beauty makes it a great place to call home. Located south of I-20 between I-35 and Hwy. 67, DeSoto is only 15 minutes from downtown Dallas. Nestled in an area sometimes referred to as the Hill Country of North Texas, DeSoto is peacefully sheltered from big city congestion but has all the benefits of a "small town" atmosphere.

The largest of four communities in Best Southwest Dallas County, DeSoto exemplifies the advantages of living and working in the area with five key attributes: Tremendous housing values, shorter commutes, cleaner air, excellent schools and quality health services.

DeSoto is a diverse community of neighborhoods and families where planning for the future is a priority. The city is constantly improving its park system to accommodate many active youth sports programs and family activities. Public safety is a priority in DeSoto as well, evidenced by the state-of-the-art police facility, which opened in 2000.

DeSoto Town Center exhibits the innovative thinking of city leaders. In the early 1990s, officials converted an abandoned strip center into this unique central business district. Town Center has become an anchor of the community, housing city hall, the recreation center, civic center, library, a 180-seat auditorium and outdoor amphitheater.

As the city continues to boom with new businesses, DeSoto maintains its sense of community. Annual events, like the Christmas Parade, Fourth of July Celebration and Toad Holler Creekfest, keep DeSoto’s hometown spirit alive. A rallying point for the DeSoto community is its dynamic public school system, which celebrates success academically and in a variety of extracurricular activities. The DeSoto Independent School District, which serves students in DeSoto and Glenn Heights, has been named a recognized district by the Texas Education Agency for three straight years. With public and private schools and a vast number of colleges and universities in the area, DeSoto residents take pride in academic achievement. Home developers take advantage of DeSoto’s award- winning schools and rolling landscape. The area’s natural beauty attracts homes from the affordable to luxury estates, all nestled in friendly neighborhoods.
