Huntsville, Texas is a small city located about 60 miles north of Houston and 160 miles south of Dallas on Interstate 45. Home to Sam Houston State University and the former home of Sam Houston, our city is unique in it great wealth of history, charm and culture. Designated a Main Street Texas city, our downtown is a thriving atmosphere of business activity and shopping and soon will be the home to the revitalized Town Theater.
As the headquarters of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice the oldest Prison building in the state of Texas is located a few blocks off the downtown square. With the employment of our two state institutions Huntsville experiences a very stable economy. The Huntsville Independent School District has shown great progress in recent years in both facilities and educational enrichment. With the school district, good private schools and the university, Huntsville is a great center for education.
It is also a great place to enjoy the natural beauty of the East Texas terrain, surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, the Sam Houston National Forest, Huntsville State Park and beautiful Lake Livingston.
