Texas Real Estate & Relocation Guide
Odem, Texas
Population: 2,499
Located in San Patricio County
Odem is at the intersection of two rail lines twenty miles from Corpus Christi in southwestern San Patricio County. The St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway laid tracks through the county in 1907, and the town was platted in 1909 by John James Welder and David Odem. It was named for Odem, who was the county sheriff.
The town developers sold farmland from the Brazado Pasture, which was once part of the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company lands. The development of this ranchland into farms, plus the absorption of the nearby small communities of Meansville, Angelita, Kaleta, and Sharpsburg, helped Odem grow as a trading center.
Today Odem is still a farming community, growing cotton, corn, and grain sorghum. In the 1980's Odem also supported a large grain elevator, and three gins were located within a few miles of the city.
Many Odem residents, who did not farm, instead worked in nearby Corpus Christi, making Odem an ideal place for those wanting to escape the more urban feel of Corpus Christi. Growth in the outlying rural areas, as well as urban development, has pushed the town's estimated population to nearly 3,000, and many new businesses have recently sprung up in the town.
Homes here range from the stately to the comfortable, from ranches to mansions. Don't expect to blow your budget either! With the average home selling for less than $80,000, you can live comfortably and affordably.
The weather here is as close to perfect as weather can be without emigrating to Aruba! Hot, somewhat humid summers give way to mild, warm fall, which in turn move to pleasant winters, which only last a few weeks before the days turn into a definite spring. Sunshine is the order of the day, and temperatures seldom dip below the 40's on even the coldest night of the year.
Many immigrants have converged on this area, and they hail from all over the globe! From the sub-Saharan African continent, to the South Americas, from the far reaches of Russia, to Michiganders, people love to move here.
It's not hard to see why either! With an interesting mix of rural and urban, with a multi-cultural feel and a community that has handled change well, Odem is all you would expect from a town and more!
