West University Place, Texas

Located inbetween Houston, Bellaire and Southside Place, West University Place is known as a desirable and affluent bedroom community. Residents have maintained a small-town charm, even with Downtown Houston just a short distance away down Highway 59 or Main Street. Often referred to as West University or West U, most of the town's streets are referenced after US colleges and universities.

Neighborhoods are sprinkled with parks and streets are lined with trees. Between Rice University and West University Place is The Village, one of Houston's first shopping districts. More than 350 stores make up The Village, including over 60 restaurants. The 16-block area has an eclectic mix of unique shops and designer boutiques.

Housing
Homes in West University Place range from $200,000 to over $1 million; in the past 5 years, housing prices have increased almost 50%. Here residents can choose from options such as small bungalows dating back to the 1920s, to much larger new builds. Brick cottages, stucco and traditional style homes are found among the old oak, maple and magnolia trees common in the community.

West University consists of around 26 subdivisions, including: Academy, Belle Court, Bissonnet Place, College Court Place, College Park, Collegeview, Colonial Terrace, Cunningham Terrace, Evanston, Fairhaven, Kent Place, Krenzler Courts, Matthews Place, Monticello, Pemberton, Pershing Place, Preston Place, Quenby Court, Rice Court, Sunset Terrace, and Virgina Court.

Education
West University Place residents are served by the Houston Independent School District, with West University Elementary School being the only school in the city. Students attend schools in nearby Houston neighborhoods, Pershing Middle School (Braeswood Place), Lamar High School (Upper Kirby) and Pin Oak Middle School in Bellaire. HISD also is home to The Rice School, a magnet school serving grades k through 8.

West University is home to only one private school and one preschool within the city limits - St. Mark's Episcopal School (k-8) and Beehive Preschool. Other private and parochial schools, a short distance away, include: Post Oak Montessori School (Bellaire), St. Vincent De Paul Catholic School (Braeswood Place), and Episcopal High School (Bellaire).
