White Oak, Texas

Located in Gregg County
Nestled in the rolling hills and piney woods of North East Texas, White Oak is located in on US Highway 80 in Gregg County about 125 east of Dallas. White Oak was born in 1884, when a dozen families moved into the piney woods of East Texas to farm and work at the local saw mills. Deciding they needed a school for their children, these settlers built a 60' X 40' building which served as a school and church building. Upon completion of the building, foreman John Bumpus declared the place should be called "White Oak", due to the two beautiful White Oak trees growing at the front corners of the newly constructed building.
White Oak became an incorporated city in 1957, and adopted a Home Rule Charter in 1994.
Today, White Oak is a small community of about 5,624 people. Bordering Longview, Texas (population 75,000), the advantageous location offers the recreational activities, and conveniences of a larger city, but without the big city hassles. The schools, parks, and safe neighborhoods provide White Oak residents a higher quality of life. White Oak truly is a "City of Pride And Tradition".
The White Oak Independent School District is proud of its rich history and commitment to excellence in all-educational endeavors. The school district has been given an exemplary rating, which includes all the campuses in the School District. Additionally, the district strives to provide a variety of educational opportunities and involvement for the entire community.
The City of White Oak has 3 parks, the biggest of which is the City Park. It sits on 45 acres. The parks consist of baseball fields, softball fields, a city swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, park pavilions, playgrounds, and is the location of the Annual Roughneck Day Festival. The city also a pool that is open during the summer months. A second park, Penick Park is located on 15 acres. The park has a basketball court, picnic tables, and playground equipment.
Once simply a bedroom community to Longview, White Oak has matured into a city that offers modern services and conveniences, while maintaining the friendliness and tranquility for which it has always been known.
