Clearfield / Hill AFB, Utah

Hill Air Force Base and the Wasatch Mountains on the east, and by Syracuse, West Point, and the Great Salt Lake on the west border Clearfield, in northern Davis County. It was one of the last communities to be settled in the north part of the county.

Clearfield was once known as "Sandridge." There was little available water and the land was thought to be unproductive. The name was later changed to Clearfield from the suggestion of a teacher, who got the idea as she looked out over the attractive open surroundings.

Water initially was brought in from Kay's Creek in Layton, until the completion of the East Canyon Dam in 1884. This brought more people to the area to live and to grow crops. Most settled in the area that is now Syracuse.

Mormons started the community and the faith is still predominant in the city today. However, the defense installations brought in workers of other denominations, and Clearfield now shows a religious diversity.

The population of Clearfield is approximately 24,000 people. Clearfield is an active community as part of the greater Wasatch Front community. Residents are still employed in farming, defense, and manufacturing, as well as in running local restaurants and businesses. It is also a convenient commute to Ogden and Salt Lake City for work as well as cultural and higher education needs.

This area is truly a gem; encircled by mountains and next to the Salt Lake, Clearfield is a popular place to settle. Utah is also one of the most affordable states in which to live, and Clearfield is no exception. Most homes sell for between $100,000 and $350,000. There is an assortment of house types and styles available, from lakeshore cottages and mansions, to rambling ranches, and from apartments to condos. A typical home, of three bedrooms sells in the $110,000-$150,000 range.

Clearfield also has excellent primary and secondary schools. Education has always been important to the residents here and they have ensured the school system reflects the spirit of excellence that resides here in Clearfield.

Clearfield is right in the middle of the marvelous recreational and cultural happenings and events that are available along the Wasatch Front. Eight major ski resorts are within a 45-minute drive of Centerville. The cultural treasures of downtown Salt Lake City, such as Ballet West, the Utah Symphony, Temple Square, and sporting events at the Delta Center are just a few minutes away.

Clearfield, like the rest of this area, has to be seen to be believed. It is exceptionally beautiful here, and as more people look to other states in which to settle, Utah, and the Salt Lake Area is increasingly becoming a region people want to settle. New commerce is springing up, and because it is such an affordable locality, more and more people are choosing to settle here.
