Highland is a beautiful rural city in northern Utah County. The lots are half acre or larger, so many of the homes are good size. Some of the owners have ranchettes with animal rights for horses or livestock pets. Schools are in the Alpine School District and are very nice. Three golf courses serve the area. The Johnny Miller signature courses at Thanksgiving Point, Tri City course, and the Alpine Country Club. Highland sits near the mouth of American Fork Canyon, home of Timpanogos Cave National Monument. It is a favorite for camping, fishing, hiking, and snowmobiling. The road up the canyon connecting to Provo Canyon is famous for the beautiful fall colors, making the Alpine Loop a great afternoon drive. Because of the larger lots, the city has installed a pressurized irrigation system in most the city for irrigating lawn, pastures, and garden.
Statistics
As of the census of 2000, there are 8,172 people, 1,804 households, and 1,733 families residing in the city. The population density is 453.3/km² (1,174.0/mi²). There are 1,864 housing units at an average density of 103.4/km² (267.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.49% White, 0.12% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 2.17% of the population are Hispanic, or Latino, of any race.
There are 1,804 households out of which 66.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 90.6% are married couples living together, 4.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 3.9% are non-families. 3.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.53 and the average family size is 4.64.
In the city the population is spread out with 45.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 4.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 104.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $80,053, and the median income for a family is $81,086. Males have a median income of $57,318 versus $24,440 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,614. 2.8% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line.
