Layton is a rapidly growing community of over 60,000 citizens located in the heart of Davis County, and close to Salt Lake City, and other large communities. Recently, it became the most heavily populated city in Davis County. Hill Air Force Base is the major employer in the city and has played a major role in the city's growth. Layton has become an important shopping and business center in the area with numerous businesses including the Layton Hills Mall. The first public building to be erected in Layton was a log schoolhouse in 1860. By 1875, the town was able to build a better schoolhouse of brick, which was heated with a stove. Thus, the old log schoolhouse with its dirt roof and open fireplace was abandoned. Home prices are very affordable. Views here are spectacular, one of the many reasons why so many settlers decided to live here, instead of moving further west. Both apartments and condominiums are offered in the Layton area. A cozy, single-family home would start at about $100,000, and move into the millions depending on what you want and can afford. Hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, mountain-biking, and water sports of all kinds are favorite pastimes in the summer months. Hunting, snowmobiling, ice climbing, downhill and cross-country skiing satisfy the adventurous during the colder months of the year. Layton's central location puts it within a half-day's drive of fifteen national parks, monuments, and recreation areas - the largest concentration of such attractions in any state south of Alaska. The weather gives wonderful opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The spring and summer temperature's stay in the 70's - 80's although sometimes they will reach the low 90's in August, and the mercury stays in the mid to high 30's during the winter months. This makes for wonderful recreation. Golf, mountain biking, hiking and camping are wonderful recreational activities that can be enjoyed for a good part of the year. If skiing is your choice of sport, both Powder Mountain and Snow Basin are wonderful ski areas located nearby. Layton is also located near the Antelope Island State Park. Access to this distinctive park is by a 7.2-mile causeway. It is worth the drive because as the island is home to a heard of 600 bison! Also roaming the plains and bluffs are deer, coyotes, antelope, and bighorn. Waterfowl and shorebirds find their place in this safe haven. Amenities at the park include camping, picnicking, hiking and other seasonal activities. If higher education is on the agenda, both Westminster College and University of Phoenix are among the 4-year institutions. Also, among the excellent colleges is the University of Utah, which is the largest research and teaching school in the state. This University is nationally known and respected for its medical and law schools. Layton has grown so dramatically because it is in one of the most beautiful states in the country, and offers unparalleled opportunities to enjoy all nature has.
