Murray, Utah

Population: 34,024
Located in Salt Lake County

The area where Murray City is presently situated was known by its early settlers as South Cottonwood. By 1860, approximately 20 families lived along the Cottonwood Creeks. The creeks and the Jordan River also served as temporary camping grounds for several Native American tribes. As the population grew, a flour mill was constructed soon followed by the establishment of a livery stable, a brickyard, woolen mills, and a cannery. Large herds of sheep were tended in what are now the western wetlands of the Jordan River.

The discovery of gold, silver, copper and lead in nearby canyons contributed to the industrialization of Murray. Over the next several decades, sixteen smokestacks dotted the Murray skyline. The smelters employed thousands of people, many of whom arrived here from south and central Europe. Many of these early settlers built dugouts for their homes until a log cabin or adobe structure could be built. Christian Berger was one of those early settlers. He helped many foreign emigrants settle in an area which was called Bergertown.

After a fierce incorporation battle, Murray City incorporated in 1902. It's first mayor, C.L. Miller won by a slim margin of 3 votes. The city annexed land several times to become a second class city which allowed the city to create its own school district.

Today, Murray's population stands at 33,000 with Mayor Daniel C. Snarr directing City affairs. Murray is regarded as one of the best cities to raise a family in. Its neighborhoods are safe and beautiful. Less commuting time, lower utilities, good public services and an affordable tax structure all account as reasons why people want to come and remain here. The City enjoys its own school district, hospital, power and water department, library system, cemetery, senior citizen center, police and fire department, and a progressive Chamber of Commerce. Through the Parks and Recreation Department and community organizations, residents enjoy a well developed park system along with a wide array of year-round arts, recreational, and educational activities for all ages.
