Located in northern Utah, Washington Terrace has a most unique history. In the beginning of World War II, the United Sates government built housing facilities for the war workers. Located on 250 acres of land in the middle of the desert, the government built 1,400 houses to accommodate these hard workers. The original intent was that the houses would only be temporary that the houses would be torn down after the war. However, after the war ended, the occupants were reluctant to leave what had become their home. A few years later, a proposal was accepted between the U.S. government and a man named David Butters. Butters had talent for city planning and immediately the work was started to relocate homes and create a city atmosphere instead of the army barrack look and feel.

In 1958 the city was finally complete with beautiful trees, grass and most of all, owners who took pride in their city. Unfortunately, Mr. Today Washington Terrace has a population of approximately 9,300. What started as a small army barracks is a flourishing city with schools, convenience stores, and even cell phone towers!

Although the homes built in the 1950's are still in existence in the community, newer homes are being added to Washington Terrace. It is worth the drive because as the island is home to a heard of 600 bison! Also roaming the plains and bluffs are deer, coyotes, antelope, and bighorn. Waterfowl and shorebirds find their place in this safe haven. Amenities at the park include camping, picnicking, hiking and other seasonal activities.

Located 45 minutes south of Washington Terrace is Salt Lake City. As host to the 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City has it all. Whether you are looking for a casual evening in the professional sports area or prefer the symphony, Salt Lake City is full of life and has something for every member of the family. If higher education is on the agenda, both Westminster College and University of Phoenix are among the 4-year institutions. Also, among finer colleges is the University of Utah, which is the largest research and teaching school in the state. This University is nationally known and respected for its medical and law schools.
