Barre, Vermont

Population: 9,291
Located in Washington County

Central Vermont's largest municipality, Barre is the "Granite Capital of the World". The work of its artisans can be seen in the building architecture, statues and in its cemeteries. The stone industry attracted laborers and artisans from all over Europe, creating a broad ethnic mix. The town is comprised of four villages, suburban and rural areas, which offer diverse housing and employment. The community offers unique mountain and valley views as well as an excellent outdoor recreation facility.

Barre is a manufacturing center dominated by granite-related industries. Waterbury, Berlin, and Northfield also host active commercial centers, and most towns have a village core with several small businesses. Resort towns in the Mad River Valley have a special character all their own. The hospitality industry dominates these towns, but not the landscape.
