Northfield, Vermont
Population: 3,208 Located in Washington County
The village of Northfield is comprised of Northfield, Northfield Falls, Northfield Center, and South Northfield. It has a fairly small population of only 5,756 residents. Northfield is a picturesque village located near Montpelier, Barre, and just "over the mountain pass" from the popular Sugarbush ski area. The village was once home to Charles Paine, a former Vermont governor and a builder of the Central Vermont Railroad. Northfield is nestled between two ridges of the Green Mountains, and its New England heritage is evident in three village greens and five covered bridges. A sense and practice of community sets Greater Northfield apart. Norwich University shares its resources - its new library, and cultural, educational, and athletic facilities and events - and Northfield provides municipal services and benefits. The neighboring village, Roxbury, shares a similar culture and history, and its students attend the middle and high school in town. Northfield is home to five scenic covered bridges, several historic churches, Memorial Park pool and playground, and Norwich University, the nation's oldest private military college. The classic village common is circled by several of the 125 local businesses. Historical Significance: The historic Northfield Inn is a turn-of-the-century mansion nestled high in the heart of the Green Mountains. Once occupied by a princess, the inn has been restored to its original Victorian elegance and is just minutes from Montpelier and Barre, the granite capital of the world. The Inn is set on a hillside overlooking the village of Northfield and the historic campus of Norwich University. Recreation: Relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the Green Mountains, scenic valleys, wildflower meadows, peaceful woodland pond, and the antique apple orchard at blossom time. Stroll through the Historic District to the charming village and winding river with five covered bridges or hike uphill to explore the Old Slate Quarry and mountain trails. Events and Activities: For the youth, there is a K-12 school system, a web of youth-serving organizations, and a variety of camps. A busy senior center is run by the seniors themselves, and the award winning Mayo Healthcare provides assisted living, residential and nursing home care. Special events such as the Vermont Quilt Festival, the Labor Day Observances-featuring the largest parade in the state, the Cabot Hosiery Sock Sale, and Ellie's Farm Market Jack-o-lantern show are held annually. Northfield is described as a "wonderful combination of college town, traditional New England village, and blue collar community with textile and woodworking businesses". Northfield's greatest asset is its people and the opportunities they create in the community.
