The village of Northfield is comprised of Northfield, Northfield Falls, Northfield Center, and South Northfield. It has a fairly small population of only 5,756 residents. Northfield is a picturesque village located near Montpelier, Barre, and just "over the mountain pass" from the popular Sugarbush ski area. The village was once home to Charles Paine, a former Vermont governor and a builder of the Central Vermont Railroad.
Northfield is nestled between two ridges of the Green Mountains, and its New England heritage is evident in three village greens and five covered bridges. A sense and practice of community sets Greater Northfield apart. Norwich University shares its resources - its new library, and cultural, educational, and athletic facilities and events - and Northfield provides municipal services and benefits.
The neighboring village, Roxbury, shares a similar culture and history, and its students attend the middle and high school in town.
Northfield is home to five scenic covered bridges, several historic churches, Memorial Park pool and playground, and Norwich University, the nation's oldest private military college. The classic village common is circled by several of the 125 local businesses.
Historical Significance:
The historic Northfield Inn is a turn-of-the-century mansion nestled high in the heart of the Green Mountains. Once occupied by a princess, the inn has been restored to its original Victorian elegance and is just minutes from Montpelier and Barre, the granite capital of the world. The Inn is set on a hillside overlooking the village of Northfield and the historic campus of Norwich University.
