Burke, Virginia

Population: 57,737
Located in Fairfax County

In the early 1770's Burke was owned by Lord Fairfax. He extended land grants to many families, including Henry Ward and Francis Coffer. Henry Ward built Burke's first house which now is the Woods Community Center in Burke Centre. Hannah Ward married Silas Burke for whom the community is named. He was a wealthy and prominent man and, at one time, held over 6000 acres of land and used his influence to bring the railroad to Burke.

Today Burke is made up of mostly residential properties with some businesses scattered throughout the area. The community offers the conveniences of a small city, such as restaurants, libraries and entertainment, as well as many untouched areas that provide a haven for all types of critters and recreational activities.

Burke has the distinction of having two Virginia Railway Express Stations, Burke Centre and Rolling Road, which provide a quick way to Washington, D.C. As you have probably discovered, we continue to look for ways to improve our area's transportation system. Metro service from the Springfield Mall area will begin in 1997. The Fairfax County Parkway will be completed in 1996.
