Independent City Fairfax, the historic seat of Fairfax County, is a residential suburb of Washington, D.C. It was incorporated as an independent city in 1961, at which time it became independent and no longer included in a county. When you arrive in Fairfax, you will immediately notice the abundance of historical buildings, cozy restaurants, quaint shops, and art galleries. It is conveniently located just 15 miles west of the Nation's Capital and 15 miles east of the Manassas Battlefields. Enjoy the 32,000 acres of public parkland and more than 600 parks throughout the county. In the old courthouse (built 1799; restored 1967) are the wills of George and Martha Washington. Both the county and the city have many historic structures, notably Gunston Hall (1755?58), Pohick Church (1774), and Sully Plantation (1794). The county is home to Wolf Trap Farm Park, the only national park for the performing arts with weekly shows by the countries top performers, under the stars! It also enjoys the reputation of having one of the safest counties of its size in the nation, having fewer police officers per 1,000 residents than any other suburban area. The school system has always maintained a reputation for having some of the best schools in Virginia. Approximately 51 cents of every county dollar goes to schools. George Mason University is located in Fairfax.
